Emptying Your Traps

1

Freezing the Trap

The Gard'Apis trap has been carefully designed to eliminate bycatch. Extensive testing has shown the bycatch rate to be as little as 0.1%.

The trap is sized to fit neatly in the drawer of a standard domestic freezer. To humanely kill the entire contents, simply leave it in the freezer for 2 hours.

2

Handling Bycatch

In the unlikely event of bycatch, place the trap in the freezer for a maximum of 3 minutes, until all insects stop moving and are rendered torpid and immobile.

Open the trap and empty it onto a suitable surface. Tip the Asian hornets into a container for return to the freezer. Any bycatch may be placed somewhere warm to recover and go on their way.

3

Rebaiting and Redeployment

The trap can be reassembled and rebaited. It is worth keeping a couple of Asian hornets back to place in the trap — upon revival, they will act as effective bait in their own right.

If there is no bycatch, the trap can be left in the freezer for a couple of hours — or overnight if brought back in the evening — then emptied and placed back in position.

4

Transporting the Trap

The trap may be carefully carried by the clip, preferably after dusk. For security — particularly if moving it a distance — place it in a suitable carrier bag. Asian Hornets do not fly at night, and therefore the trap will not attract more once darkness falls.
